Best Time to Trade Forex in the UK

For most UK traders, the best time to trade forex is the London morning, roughly 8am to 11am UK time, and the London-New York overlap, roughly 1pm to 5pm. Those are the hours when the most banks and traders are active. Late evening and the Asian hours tend to be quieter, especially for pairs involving sterling.

Quick answer: what is the best time to trade forex in the UK?

The busiest windows are the London open, from about 8am UK time, and the London-New York overlap, about 1pm to 5pm. Major US data usually lands at 1:30pm UK time, but at 12:30pm in the weeks when US and UK clocks change on different dates. Asian hours are usually quieter for sterling pairs.

Why the time of day matters in forex

The currency market has no central exchange, so it trades over the counter from Sunday evening to Friday evening UK time. What changes through the day is who is at their desk. When London and New York are both open, more orders meet, spreads usually tighten and moves away from levels tend to be cleaner.

In thin hours, spreads widen and ranges shrink, so a price action level can be poked through without any real intent behind it. For a beginner, that alone is a good reason to choose a busy window.

Forex trading sessions in UK time

Session times are conventions, not official hours, and providers draw them slightly differently. These are the windows we work with, in UK time, which is GMT in winter and BST in summer.

  • Asian session (Tokyo), about midnight to 9am in winter: Japan does not change its clocks, so in BST this becomes about 1am to 10am UK time.
  • London session, about 8am to 4:30pm: London local hours, so they stay the same for you all year.
  • New York session, about 1pm to 10pm: 8am to 5pm in New York, an hour earlier in UK time during the clock-change gap weeks.
  • London-New York overlap, about 1pm to 5pm: usually the most active part of the day for the major pairs.

The London open

The first hours after 8am often set the day’s direction for sterling and euro pairs. They also produce plenty of false breaks of the overnight range, which our guide on how to avoid false breakouts covers in detail.

The Asian session from the UK

The Asian session can suit the yen and Australian dollar pairs, but most UK traders are asleep for it. We use its high and low as reference levels for the London open rather than trading it.

Data releases and central banks, in UK time

Scheduled news moves currencies more than anything else in the day. Most of it arrives at fixed times, so you can plan around it. Our guide to what moves the US dollar explains why US data matters for almost every pair.

The GMT/BST clock-change trap

US clocks go forward on the second Sunday in March and back on the first Sunday in November. UK clocks change on the last Sunday of March and October, so for a short spell each spring and autumn every US time arrives an hour earlier in the UK.

In 2027, US clocks go forward on 14 March and UK clocks on 28 March. The Fed’s 16-17 March meeting falls inside that gap, so its decision is due at 6pm UK time, not 7pm. The autumn gap runs from 31 October to 7 November.

Matching a session to your day and your pairs

There is no single best time to trade forex for everyone. The right window is the busy one you can actually sit through without rushing.

  • Free in the morning: the London open suits GBP/USD, EUR/USD and EUR/GBP.
  • Free in the afternoon: the overlap suits the US dollar pairs, around the data.
  • Working full time: analyse in the evening and leave orders, the swing approach in our guide to swing, day and position trading styles.

Which pairs to start with is a separate question, covered in our guide to the best forex pairs for beginners. If you also trade metals, our article on the best time to trade gold in the UK adds the LBMA auction times.

A worked example: sizing a trade after US data

Example: on a hypothetical £3,000 account risking 1% per trade, the most you plan to lose is £30. A GBP/USD setup forms at 2pm, once the 1:30pm data has settled, with a stop 30 pips away.

The stake is £30 ÷ 30 = £1 per pip. If the post-data candles are wide and the stop needs 60 pips, the stake halves to 50p per pip and the risk stays £30. Our guide to calculating position size for spread bets and CFDs shows the method for other pairs.

Spread bets and CFDs are leveraged, and around releases spreads can widen and stops can slip, so a loss can exceed the planned £30. That is why we wait for a closed candle after the data before entering. Our economic calendar guide covers planning around releases.

Common mistakes when timing forex trades

  • Forgetting the gap weeks. A reminder set for 1:30pm is an hour late for two weeks in March 2027.
  • Entering seconds before a release. The spread alone can take out a tight stop.
  • Trading quiet hours like busy ones. A late-evening GBP/USD range rarely behaves like the London open.
  • Ignoring the calendar. Our list of conditions when not to trade covers the days to stand aside.
  • Trading every session. Pick one window and learn how your pairs behave in it.

Frequently asked questions

What time does the forex market open in the UK?

The market opens on Sunday evening UK time, as trading starts in Asia-Pacific, and runs to Friday evening. Activity builds from the London open at about 8am on weekdays.

Is it worth trading forex on a Friday afternoon?

Liquidity usually thins after the London close on Friday, and moves can be erratic into the weekly close. Many traders reduce or close positions before the weekend to avoid gaps on Sunday night.

Do forex session times change when the clocks go forward?

London hours stay the same in UK time. Tokyo hours move an hour later in UK time during BST, and US times move an hour earlier for the few weeks when the US and UK clocks differ.

What is the worst time to trade forex in the UK?

Thin hours, such as late evening and the weekly open, often bring wider spreads. The minutes around major data are risky for new entries too.
